Abstract
1,020,145. Gas turbine by-pass jet engines. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Dec. 7, 1964, No. 49798/64. Headings F1G and F1J. A power plant comprises a plurality of gas turbine type gas generators each of which comprises an axial-flow compressor, combustion equipment and turbine in flow series, there being a common compressor arranged to supply part at least of the air compressed thereby to all the axial-flow compressors of the gas generators, also a common turbine which is driven by the gases from the gas generators, the common turbine being arranged to drive the common compressor. The engine shown comprises a cylindrical casing 11 in which are mounted four gas turbine type gas generators 13 each of which comprises an axial-flow compressor 15, combustion equipment 16 and turbine 17, the gases generated by the four gas generators discharging through a duct to drive a common turbine 21, the exhaust gases from the turbine 21 discharging through duct 23. The turbine 21 is mounted on shaft 22 and drives a common compressor 12 disposed upstream of the gas generators 13, a portion of air delivered by the compressor 12 passing into the compressors 13 of the gas generators. The remaining portion of air delivered by the compressor 12 passes between and around the gas generators to the by-pass passage 20 and then flows through mixer chutes 24 to mix with the exhaust gases flowing through duct 23. The inlet guide vanes 25 of the compressors 15 may be moved so as to completely close off the air inlets so that one or more of the gas generators may be closed down while the others continue in operation.
