In a sub-aqueous wellhead comprising a casing head 15, a hanger 25 supporting casing 25a, and flow passages 28 connecting the annulus surrounding the casing to the casing head bore above the hanger, an assembly 36 for closing the passages includes a part 39 releasably connected to a running tool 37, a part 38 releasably connected to the hanger, a seal ring 50, and a pin 45 shearable to permit relative movement of the parts to expand the ring into engagement with the bore. The running tool carries packing 53 which permits pressure to be applied to the annulus between the casing and the tool supporting string 37a to test the seal ring. A split spring 54 permits the tool to withdraw the assembly if the seal ring is ineffective. A hanger (63a) (Fig. 7 not shown) seating on a seat (64) on the assembly supports a casing (63) a seal assembly (65) is fitted to close passages through the hanger (63a) and the well is completed by running tubing and adding a Christmas tree. Slips (67) are located immediately below the seal (65c) of the assembly (65) for holding the assemblies and casing hangers down within the casing head. The casing head has webs (18) (Fig. I not shown) carrying angles (16) formed with bayonet slots engaging pins (17) protruding from a conductor pipe (10).
