Abstract

A strengthened glass-ceramic article has an outer portion compressively stressed with respect to the inner portion. The inner portion contains a parent crystal phase (p) which contains an alkali metal ion (a) and in the outer portion at least a portion of the ion (a) is replaced by an ion (b) of larger diameter. The phase (p) is b -spondumene, thermally stable b -eucryptite, nepheline, carnegieite or "stuffed" b -quartz. The article is strengthened by contacting the surface with a material containing ion (b), at 200-800 DEG C. Ion (a) may be, e.g., Li, Na or K, and ion (b) may be e.g., Na, K or Cs. In a previous step, the article may be exposed to ion-exchange with Li-containing material.
