Abstract
A high tensile steel having good low temperature toughness contains in percentage by weight .C.0.05 - 0.25 .Si.0.1 - 0.7 .Al.0.04 - 0.17 .Mn.0.5 - 1.6 .Cr.0.2 - 1.6 .Mo.0.05 - 1 .Fe.balance together with vanodium optionally present within the range 0.03-0.15% and nickel optionally within the range 0.01-0.0, the combined content of manganese, chromium, molybdenum and nickel if any not exceeding 2.5, and is austenitized, cooled at 10 DEG -60 DEG C./sec. and tempered within the range extending from 500 DEG C. to the A1 point.
