Abstract

An austenitic steel, suitable for use in generator rings, which is characterized by good cold formability and a grain size no coarser than A.S.T.M. 4 comprises:- .C.0.6-0.8% .Mn.8-10% .Si.0.2-0.6% .Ni.6-7% .Cr.4-5% .Nb.0.3-0.6% .Fe.balance incidental impurities may be present, e.g. up to 0.05% P, up to 0.03% S and Al and N. After heating to 2000 DEG F. for two hours and air-cooling, the steel may be cold expanded 25-30% and aged between 500 DEG and 650 DEG F.
