Abstract

110.232. White, A. E., (United States Light & Heat Corporation). Nov. 22, 1916. Exciting.-Relates to a modification of the invention described in Specification 11510/15 and consists in connecting the negative brushes 10, 11, Fig. 1, through a field-magnet winding or windings 19 on one or both of the poles adjacent to the shunt-wound pole 15. The effect of the additional windings is to produce a large current output at low speeds and a low current output at high speeds. As described in the prior Specification, the machine is run as a motor to start up the engine by closing a switch 2 by which the positive brushes are all connected to the battery, the negative brushes being connected through the series field winding 17 to the other terminal of the battery. When the engine has started, the switch 2 is opened, and the machine is driven as a generator. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the field winding 19 is provided on the pole 18 only and is wound to strengthen the south pole at low speeds and to weaken it at high speeds when the current in the winding reverses. In a modification, the winding on the pole 20 is connected as shown in Fig. 3, the winding being arranged to weaken the south pole at low speeds and strengthen it at high speeds.
