Exciting; windings.-A machine for use as an engine-starting motor and as a battery-charging generator has an armature winding with a coil pitch of substantially 120 electrical degrees. Fig 1 represents the machine in operation as a fourpole motor; for operation as a two-pole generator, the pole 5 is given South polarity, and the windings on the poles 4, 6 are open-circuited so that these poles may act as regulating poles to keep the output substantially constant. The coils 7, 9 on the main poles are connected across the main and auxiliary brushes, as shown in Fig. 7; the auxiliary brushes need not be at right angles to the main bushes.
