Abstract
1,096,522. Extruding. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. March 5, 1965 [March 18, 1964], No. 11431/64. Heading B3P. Hydrostatic extrusion apparatus comprises a cylindrical pressure container 10 for receiving the workpiece to be extruded, having an extrusion orifice 11 at one end and a sealable closure member 16 at the opposite end, the container being connected by a radial duct 13 with a liquid pressurizing cylinder and plunger assembly 7, 8. Plunger 8 passes through a liquid reservoir 22 and acts on a sealing assembly 9 which is used to pressurize the liquid in cylinder 7. The plunger 8 is actuated by a double-acting piston lead 6 the underside 20 of which is connected to a supply of pressure oil. To initiate the extrusion stroke, nitrogen gas under pressure is admitted above the piston head 6. The speed of extrusion is regulated by a metering valve 21 which controls the discharge of oil from chamber 20. Container 10 has an extension 15 for receiving long slender workpieces, whose outer end is closed by plug 16 and breech mechanism 17.
