A pattern wheel for a circular multifeed machine includes at least one series of pivotally mounted jacks, selectively moved between operative and inoperative positions by an electro-magnet as they approach the needle butts. In one embodiment the wheel comprises two series of jacks 19, 19', mounted in slots defined by magnetisable spacers (22), and acting alternate needle jacks 10. The jacks are pivoted to an operative position, at one side of the slots, as the wheel passes a permanent magnet 23. An electromagnet 24 then influences selected spacers which attract the jacks approaching the magnet, swinging them to an inoperative position at the other side of the slots. Operative jacks push needle jacks clear of a raising cam 8. In a second embodiment (Figs. 4, 8 not shown) the slots are defined by cranked elements (34) bearing locking fingers (37-8) and deflecting cams (35-6). Immediately adjacent a selecting electromagnet (45, 45) the elements are raised and deflect the jacks to an inoperative position. Selected jacks are pulled back to an operative position by the magnet and immediately locked by the fingers as they are lowered again. Energisation of the electromagnet is controlled by a photoelectrically scanned punched tape or film and synchronised to the operation of the machine.
