Abstract
1,083,833. Cathodes. LITTON INDUSTRIES Inc. June 8, 1965 [June 5, 1964], No. 24261/65. Heading H1D. A magnetron cathode includes a major surface region 40 comprising a refractory metal matrix having an alkaline earth compound dispersed therein, and which is secondary emissive but has a low rate of evaporation of free alkaline earth metal, and one or more minor surface 41, 42 providing a major source of primary electrons, to aid starting. The region 40 may comprise a compacted and sintered mixture of barium carbonate with W and/or Mo, or a porous cylinder of W, Mo or Re impregnated with tungstates or molybdates of barium. The regions 41, 42 may comprise rings of porous W impregnated with BaO.2CaO.2Al 2 O 3 , or rings of Ta, Zr, Ti or Nb which reduce non- emissive compounds from adjacent areas of region 40 to produce free barium. End rings 41, 42 may be replaced by a single ring provided centrally of region 40. Specific examples are given.
