Abstract
A photographic diffusion transfer image-receiving element contains an alkali-impermeable base layer, an alkali-permeable outer layer and one or more partially permeable intermediate layers so that the permeability to alkali increases from the base to the outer layer, the layers being impregnated with aqueous alkali solution and the surface of the outer layer being substantially dry to the touch. The base layer, which may be the support for the element or may be mounted on a support such as paper or plastic, may consist of polyvinyl hydrophobic butyral, polyethylene, ethyl cellulose, subbed polyethylene terephthalate or "paper" made of polyethylene fibre or polyethylene encapsulated cellulose. The intermediate and outer layers may consist of partial polyvinyl butyrals, partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate or mixtures of polyvinyl alcohol and poly-4-vinylpyridine. The element is impregnated by immersion in an alkaline processing solution which may contain potassium or sodium hydroxide, sodium tetraborate, benzotriazole, N-benzyl-a -picolinium bromide and optionally sodium thiosulphate. Alkaline-earth metal hydroxides such as those of barium and calcium may also be present as getters for carbon dioxide during storage. The element may be stored, e.g. in the camera, with a 'wet' outer surface, this being squeegeed dry during removal from storage. The element may be used in the container and camera described in Specification No. 1059849 or in conjunction with the photosensitive materials having a polymeric acid layer described in Spcification 1,074,063. The element may be adapted for use in the silver halide diffusion process or in dye-diffusion processes using dye-developers or couplers and may include a dye-mordant in the image-receiving layer.
