Abstract

An adhesive comprises unvulcanized and unvulcanizable natural rubber latex, plus additives which control its tackiness and bonding strength. The additives may include an emulsion of a hydrocarbon or polyethylene wax and/or a latex of a styrene/methylmethacrylate/ethyl acrylate copolymer or a carboxylated styrene-butadiene copolymer or a vinyl acetate/alkyl acrylate copolymer; wetting agents such as an alkyl sulphonate or sulphate; thickeners such as casein, methyl cellulose, acrylates, alginates or polyvinyl alcohol; fungicides; and tackifying resins.ALSO:Foamed plastic sheet materials are coated with a cold-seal adhesive based on natural rubber latex that is unvulcanised and/or does not contain a vulcanising agent and containing at least 10% by weight calculated on the adhesive of natural rubber, plus additives which control its tackiness and bonding strength. The additives may include an emulsion of a hydrocarbon or polyethylene wax and/or a latex of a styrene/methylmethacrylate/ethyl acrylate copolymer or a styrene-butadiene rubber or a vinyl acetate/alkyl acrylate copolymer; wetting-agents such as an alkyl sulphonate or sulphate; thickeners such as casein, methyl cellulose, acrylates, alginates or polyvinyl alcohol; fungicides; and tackifying resins. The compositions may be applied by roller coating, air knife coating or gravure coating to all or part of the substrate. The substrate may be foamed polystyrene, foamed PVC or foamed polyurethane.
