Abstract

A water-remoistenable adhesive coated sheet material comprises a film of water-insoluble polymeric material having on at least one face a water-remoistenable coating which comprises a continuous layer of a water-activatable adhesive in which is dispersed a water-insoluble organic polymeric substance having good adhesion to the film. The layer of water-activable adhesive may have a water-insoluble acrylic ester polymer or a water-insoluble polyvinyl ether dispersed therein. A primer layer of synthetic elastomer or a blend of synthetic elastomer with other polymeric materials may be interposed between the film and the layer of water-activatable adhesive. A water-soluble organic polymer may be present in the primer layer. The film may be of polyethylene or polypropylene and the primer layer comprises acrylate polymers or copolymers and butadiene-styrene. The film may be of vinyl chloride polymer or copolymer and the primer layer comprises butadiene-acrylonitrile, butadiene-styrene, polyisoprene or acrylate polymers or copolymers and may contain a minor proportion of a polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl pyrrolidone and blends of phenolic resins with synthetic rubbers e.g. polychloroprene, butadiene-acrylonitrile or polyvinyl chloride. The film may be cellulose acetate and the primer layer comprises acrylate polymers or copolymers, polyvinyl acetate or an epoxy resin. The film may be of polyethylene terephthalate and the primer layer includes a blend of synthetic elastomer with a phenolic resin or a polyester. The water-activatable adhesive may comprise one or more of the following: a water-soluble cellulose derivative such as methyl, ethyl, sodium carboxy methyl, hydroxyethyl, carboxymethyl hydroxethyl, and ethylhydroxy ethyl-cellulose, alginates, or starch and its derivatives e.g. dextrin, gum arabic, gum karaya, gum tragacanth, locust bean gum, geletin glue, casein, polyvinyl alcohl, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyacrylic acid and its salts, polyacrylamides, polymethylolacrylamides, ethylene oxide polymers and polyvinyl methyl ether. The adhesive coated sheet material may be prepared by applying a layer of aqueous solution of a water soluble adhesive in admixture with an aqueous emulsion of a water-insoluble organic polymeric substance to a film of a water-insoluble organic polymeric material and dried to form a water-remoistenable coating thereon. The film may be coated with a solution or dispersion of a water-insoluble polymeric substance having good adhesion to the film, the coat being dried to form a primer layer prior to the application of the layer of aqueous solution in admixture with the aqueous emulsion.
