Abstract

799,424. Permeable pressure-sensitive adhesive sheets. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. Nov. 8, 1954 [Nov. 6, 1953], No. 30827/53. Class 140. A water-vapour permeable material is coated with a composition which is foamed, or is adapted to be foamed, and which is a mixture of a latex of natural rubber, or of a synthetic elastomer, and an aqueous emulsion of a resinous tackifying agent, and the coating, after foaming, where the composition is not already foamed, is dried, whereby the continuous aqueous phase is removed and the foam breaks down to leave a discontinuous layer on the backing, to produce a pressure-sensitive adhesive tape or sheet of which the adhesive coating is permable to moisture to the extent of at least 200 grms./sq. m./hr. The coating is by knife spreading and the drying by heat. The latex may be high serum content natural rubber latex or a latex of butadiene-sytrene copolymer or polychloroprene. The composition may be foamed by high-speed whisking or may incorporate blowing agents, e.g. organic hydrazides, or foaming agents, e.g. ammonium oleate. The composition may also include thickening agents, which preferably increase the water absorption properties of the adhesive, e.g. ammonium polymethacrylate, fillers, e.g. zinc oxide, precipitated chalk, or aluminium hydroxide, softeners, e.g. aqueous emulsions of mineral oils, lanolin, or methyl dihydroabietate. The resinous tackifying agent may be hydrogenated esters of wood rosins, methyl dihydroabietate, terpene resin, or other synthetic resins. Examples refer to the use of " Revertex" (Registered Trade Mark) concentrated latex " Vulcastab " and. " Dispersol " stabilizers.
