Abstract
Carbon steel wire, containing 0.2 to 0.6% of carbon, or alloy steel wire containing in addition to the above range of carbon content one or more of silicon, manganese, nickel, chromium, molybdenum vanadium or boron up to 3% of each, is austenitized, quenched and tempered at 300 DEG - 700 DEG C. before being cold forged to shape. The wire may be stretched by less than 20% prior to austenitization, and may be annealed at 300 DEG - 600 DEG C. after forging. The latter step may include cold upsetting, cold heading, cold extrusion or cold forming. Production of bolts is particularly described.
