Abstract
A steel having good low temperature toughness contains in percentage by weight .C.0.01-0.15 .Si.0.05-0.4 .Ni.4.5 -7.5 .Mn.0.5 -3.5 .N.0.001-0.05 .Al.(acid soluble) not more than 0.05 .Mo.0.05-0.5 optionally present .Fe.balance and has a structure of fine dispersed austenite in a ferrite matrix. The aluminium present as nitride may be replaced by an equivalent amount of one or more of Zr, Ti, Be, Nb, V, Hf, Ta or B. The steel may be austenitized at 700 DEG -900 DEG C., followed by quenching and tempering at 525 DEG -650 DEG C., but when more than 0.005% of aluminium nitride is formed the first step may be carried out at a higher temperature sufficient to dissolve the nitride without producing excessive grain growth. Alternatively the steel may be treated at an even higher temperature e.g. 1350 DEG C., quenched, and then austenitized; in yet a further variation the steel may be treated at 1350 DEG C., quenched, normalized from 700 DEG C., and then austenitized, quenched and tempered. The fine dispersed austenite produced in the tempering step may be partially converted to martensite upon the subsequent quenching.
