Abstract
1352403 Stainless steels BRUNSWICK CORP 6 July 1971 [21 Sept 1970] 31683/71 Heading C7A Stainless steels of the 18-8 type are treated to increase their strength by rapidly quenching the solution annealed steel to prevent carbide precipitation, cold working the steel in one or more steps to at least 97% reduction in area. Alternatively a reduction of 75% may be employed with heat treatment subsequent to at least one cold working step to a sub-transformation temperature to inhibit dynamic recovery. The subtransformation treatment, e.g. at 700-825 ‹F, may take place between each cold working step and the quenching may be preceeded by one or more additional cold working steps, each followed by annealing, to give a 75% reduction in area. The steel may have a composition Fe the balance with or without Cu up to 0À5%, Mo up to 0À9%, P up to 0À04%, S up to 0À03% and small amounts of N.
