Abstract

A carding machine set has variable speed drive means for the feeding means of the first card, variable speed drive means for the doffer of the final card, constant speed drive means for the main cylinders of the cards, and means for adjusting the two variable speed means during operation of the cards. As described there are two cards, and motors (6) and (14) (Fig. 1 not shown) which are interconnected by an "electric shaft," and preferably rotate in synchronism at least during the running up and running down period, respectively drive the licker-in, cylinder, and comb of the first card, and the cylinder, comb and rubbing condenser of the final card. Motor (6) also drives through variable transmission (23) the frequency control for the feed hopper and the drawing apparatus, and through variable transmission (27) the doffer and the web squeezer at the exit of the first card, and the apparatus for feeding the web into the second card. Motor 14 drives through variable transmission (37) the doffer of the final card, the tape condenser, and the bobbins winding station. In operation the weight of either the web produced by the second card or one or more condenser rovings is continuously sensed and used to control through an electric circuit transmission (23) and (37). Transmission (27) may be connected to transmission (23) such that the web thickness between the cards is kept constant.
