Abstract

910,759. Preparing fibres for spinning. T.M.M. (RESEARCH) Ltd. Jan. 3, 1961 [Jan. 15, 1960], No. 1577/60. Classes 120 (1), 120 (2) and 120 (3). Apparatus for preparing fibres for spinning includes a battery of carding machines and means for continuously drafting and combining a plurality of the drafted slivers delivered by these machines, the feed and/or delivery elements of the latter being positively driven at identical speeds. The main cylinders of the carding machines are driven from a power source separate from that for the feed and delivery elements and preferably independently. The doffers may be driven from a common line shaft and the doffer drive is transmitted to the feed roller of each machine. The supply of fibres from the blowroom to the carding machines is through a pneumatic conveyer BR that discharges into a reservoir R from which a further pneumatic conveyer PC delivers to a belt conveyer MC from which the fibres are swept laterally by adjustable paddles P into shoots CH that may be provided with vibrating walls pierced with bleed holes. Instruments sensitive to the head of fibres in the reservoir R control delivery to it. Condenser and fan units are represented at CF1 and CF2. Slivers emerging from the carding machines are collected upon a railway head delivery table RH for drafting and delivery as a single sliver at the draw frame DB. Although circular cans may be used, cans may be of rectangular plan divided into several compartments and mounted to be indexed to sliver receiving position. Instead of forming a sliver, the draw frame DB may be arranged to deliver laps for creeling at a combing machine. If a blockage occurs in the conveyer system the electric motors actuating the system will stop, but the conveyers are arranged to continue operation when carding machines are inoperative. The feed elements and doffers of the carding machines CM, the draw frame DB and the coiler CO are driven by a common electric motor through clutches and variable-speed units. If a motor driving a carding machine were to fail, an electrically controlled clutch would stop the whole of the delivery part of the plant. Individual sliver stop motions are provided on the railway head table, between each carding machine and the railway head, and between the draw frame and the coiler.
