Abstract
1,066,461. Capacitors. METALLIZED PRODUCTS CO. Inc. Oct. 4. 1963 [Oct. 4, 1962; Feb. 7, 1963], No. 39192/63. Heading H1M. A self-healing capacitor comprises a first ribbon 10, Fig. 4, of dielectric material having a plurality of continuous longitudinal conductors 14, 16 on one side, and a second ribbon 12 of dielectric material having a plurality of transverse metallized areas 26 deposited on one side. The capacitor connections are made to the outside edges of the longitudinal conductors 14, 16, so that the overall capacitor consists of a series-parallel arrangement as shown in Fig. 1. It is shown in the Specification that such an arrangement reduces possible damage to the capacitor in self-healing operations occurring at high voltage. The dielectric ribbons may be of terephthalate polyester film and the metallized coatings may be of aluminium or zinc, applied by vacuum evaporation and condensation, or cathode sputtering or chemical vapour plating. Deposition may also be effected by transfer from a separate substrate. An embodiment wherein the first ribbon carries three longitudinal conductors and the second ribbon has two rows of transverse metallized areas is described (Figs. 5 and 7, not shown). For purposes of making easy connections and avoiding the effects of heavy discharges, the longitudinal conductors may be metal foil strips arranged to overlap the edges of the first ribbon (Fig. 8, not shown).
