Abstract
828,434. Capacitors. BRITISH DIELECTRIC RESEARCH Ltd. March 28, 1956 [March 28, 1955; May 20, 1955], Nos. 9042/55 and 14640/55. Class 37. A capacitor comprises a winding of insulating film having' electrodes formed by an adherent metal layer separated from a second metal layer by an anodized oxide film. As shown, a film 1 of polystyrene or polyethyleneterephthalate carries, as one electrode, one or more metallized layers 2 which are anodized to form the dielectric 3 on which is deposited another metal layer 4 to act as second electrode. For higher voltages, Fig. 3, either or both electrodes may be divided into a plurality of sections 11, 12, 13 and 15, 16 to provide a number of series connected capacitors. Connections are made by spraying metal on to the ends of the roll formed by the overlapping edges of electrode sections 11, 13. An embodiment is described whereby the outer electrode has the larger number of sectioned strips. Selfhealing properties are improved by dividing each series element into a number of concentric parts which are externally connected in parallel. The first electrode 2 is 0.6Á thick aluminium deposited on the insulating film 1 by electroplating after vacuum evaporation. A sectioned electrode may be either deposited in strips or divided into sections by burning off narrow strips or by the process described in Specification 742,056. As a modification, the first electrode may be of nickel (deposited by the nickel carbonyl process) on which the aluminium film, the whole of which is later converted to oxide, is deposited. An anodic oxide layer is next formed. The second electrode is deposited 0.2Á thick by vacuum evaporation, temporary masking strips being employed if a divided electrode is required. A further modification avoids the deposition of anodizable metal by using an aluminium or tantalum foil lacquered on one side then reduced in thickness by electrolytic or chemical polishing before being anodized.
