Abstract
1,064,678. Valves; springs. SAUNDERS VALVE CO. Ltd. Nov. 29,1963 [Nov. 30, 1962], No. 45426/62. Headings F2S and F2V. An operating mechanism for a valve is convertable from fluid pressure actuated closing and spring opening to fluid pressure actuated opening-spring closing, and vice versa. A weirtype closure is actuated by fluid pressure admitted at 16 or 17 to either side of a diaphragm 11, piston or bellows, to close or open against the action of a spring 22 which bears against hubs 31, 33 which are restricted in maximum displacement along spindle 21 by keeps 25, 21 and restrained therefrom, as required, either for spring opening or closing respectively, by the abutment against the hubs of either one of a pair of movable stops comprising a threaded sleeve 26, and an element 32 which is rotatable from a position of engagement of recesses 36 with pillars 35 to sliding retraction thereupon. The maximum opening of the closure is determined by the abutment of the shoulder 37 of spindle 18. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown), the conversion is facilitated by attachment of the pair of stops (47, 49) to a cross-head, upon pillars (48), which is displaceable by a member (42) threaded into the valve housing. The keeps (51, 53) abut against either one of a pair of stops (52, 54) on the spindle (21). In both embodiments, clearance between the lower keep and stop enables spring and fluid pressure closing to be simultaneously applied. The operating mechanism can also be situated at right angles to the valve, operated via an intermediate bell-crank. Tension springs, hairpin springs or leaf springs may be employed in place of the coil spring.
