Abstract
Esters are prepared from mono-, di-, and tricarboxylic acids or anhydrides and an excess of monovalent aliphatic alcohols at a temperature of from 140 DEG to 220 DEG C. in the presence as a catalyst of finely divided titanic acid prepared by reacting titanium tetrachloride with methanol and hydrolysing the resultant product with methanolic aqueous ammonia in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Alcohols mentioned are n-butanol, n-pentanol, n-hexanol, n-heptanol, n-octanol, n-nonanol, and n-decanol, isobutyl, amyl alcohols, isohexanol, 2-ethyl hexanol, and oxo-alcohols and examples describe the preparation of di-(2-ethylhexyl)-trimellitate, and the decyl ester of tall oil fatty acid.ALSO:Titanic acid is prepared by reacting titanium tetrachloride with methanol and introducing this reaction mixture to a solution of methanol, 25% ammonia and 3% hydrogen peroxide. The product is washed and dehydrated to yield a colourless powder suitable for use as an esterification catalyst.
