Abstract

Esters are obtained by reacting tartaric acid or citric acid with respectively 2-2,9 or 1-1,9 moles of acetic anhydride per mole of acid, removing free acetic acid, and reacting the product with a compound (RO)v-X-(OH)2, where R is a C8-22 alkyl or fatty acid acyl radical, X is the residue of a watersoluble aliphatic polyhydric alcohol, and v and w are small whole numbers. Specified second reactants are fatty acid mono- and/or diglycerides, such as tallow fatty acid monoglyceride; propylene glycol monostearate, tallow fatty acid mixed mono- and di-esters of methyl glucoside, polyoxyethylene lauryl alcohol, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate, and tallow fatty acid mono-ester of sucrose.
