Abstract

A slow-release fertilizer is produced by coating fertilizer granules with 2-20% of a quick-drying isomerized polyene oil and drying the coating. The fertilizer may be a PKN fertilizer or urea. The granules may have a particle size of 2-4 mm. The polyene may be derived from isoprene, piperylene, cyclopentadiene, cyclohexadiene-1,3, butadiene, 3-methylpentatriene-1,4,6, or n-decatriene,-1,5,9. Copolymerization may be effected with ethylene, propylene, butylene, isobutylene, vinylacetylene, styrene, or acrylonitrile. Isomerization may be effected in the presence of a transistion metal. The oil may have a molecular weight of 500-40,000. It may contain other polymers not capable of further polymerization, e.g. polystyrene or polyacrylonitrile, or their monomers. The oil may be sprayed on to granules heated by hot air at a temperature of up to 300 DEG C. in a rotating drum. A catalyst, e.g. cyclohexanone peroxide, may be present. A plurality of coatings may be applied.
