Abstract
Rubbery copolymers of a major proportion of a mono-olefinic compound free from halogen substituents, with a minor proportion, e.g. below 20 per cent, of an organic compound having at least one olefinic group and at least one halogen substituent in the molecule, are cured by admixture with an alkali metal, magnesium or zinc, and heated. Specified copolymers are derived by polymerization of isobutylene and p-bromostyrene at low temperatures suing a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, and methyl acrylate and p-brom-styrene in aqueous emulsion in the presence of ammonium persulphate. Preferably the copolymer is hot-milled before incorporation of the curing agent. The preferred metal is sodium in pellet form. The copolymers may be derived from mixtures of mono-olefines and diolefines and whilst the use of monohalogenated compounds is preferred, polyhalogenated compounds, e.g. dichlorbutadiene, may also be used.
