Abstract
Cellulose materials are dyed and cross-linked by applying an acid dye having little affinity for cellulose and, after optionally drying, impregnating with formaldehyde and a catalyst capable of promoting the reaction between cellulose and formaldehyde, e.g. a metallic salt which is a Lewis acid in the solid state, and heating the so-treated cellulose to effect curing. Any ammonium salt may be used that does not attack the material or the dyestuff employed, e.g. the halides, nitrate, sulphate or carbonate or the ammonium salt of the dye itself. The preferred catalyst is MgCl2.6H2O and the catalyst and formaldehyde are preferably applied at pH 5-10. Curing may be effected at 110-180 DEG C. Examples of dyeing and crease-proofing fabrics of cotton and rayon are given.
