Abstract
Fibrous materials of natural or synthetic fibres are dyed with lenco vat dyes without using oxidising agents by applying to the fibrous material an aqueous preparation of an ester salt of a lenco vat dye, drying the material and subsequently heating the material for 5 seconds to 4 minutes at 170 DEG to 240 DEG C. The aqueous preparation may also contain an inorganic or organic acid or a salt thereof, e.g. ammonium which splits off acid on heating, or mixtures thereof and the pH of the preparation preferably does not exceed 5. The preparation which may also contain ethylene oxide/nonyl phenol condensates may be used as a printing paste or padding bath. Fibrous materials referred to include cotton, wool, silk, linear polyesters, polyamides and polyacrylonitrile and mixtures thereof and the samples describe the dyeing of polyethylene terephthalate and mixtures thereof with wool or cotton and polyamides.
