Abstract

1,053,961. Coating apparatus. BOSTIK Ltd. March 19, 1964 [March 21, 1963], No. 11601/ 64. Heading B2L. An adhesive applying apparatus comprises a disc 20 (Figs. 2 and 4 not shown) mounted to rotate in a part circular cavity 23 in an electrically-heated casing 22, part of the space between the periphery of the disc and the arcuate wall 23 of the cavity defining a chamber 44 to which molten thermoplastic adhesive composition is supplied and from which a film of the composition is carried forward by and on the periphery of the disc to be applied to an article brought into contact with the disc where it protrudes from the casing. The adhesive composition is supplied to the apparatus in the form of a rod R which is advanced by feed wheels 32, 34 into a bushing 31, and via passages 30, 66 to a further passage 70 which is defined by a groove in one side wall of the cavity 23 and by the side face of the disc. The passage 70 is of arcuate form and is concave with respect to the axis of the disc and extends to the adhesive chamber 44, rotation of the disc co-operating with the arcuate shape of the passage 70 to provide a pumping action on the molten adhesive composition. An adjustable doctor device 26 regulates the thickness of the film of adhesive deposited upon the disc. A pivoted vane mounted in a V-shaped recess 50 in the casing adapted to be adjusted in position by the quantity of adhesive composition in the chamber 44 acts upon a microswitch 60 to interrupt the feed of the rod R of adhesive material as required. In a modified embodiment (Fig. 3 not shown) the passage or groove in the side wall of the cavity is of spiral form and subtends an angle of more than 360 degrees at the axis of the disc.
