Abstract
1,049,874. Supply systems for heating elements; thermal switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 4, 1964 [May 20, 1963], No. 20005/63. Headings H2B and H2H. An electric immersion heater apparatus comprises two selectively energizable heating elements UR, LR; the short element UR heating the upper region of a vessel, the long element LR the lower region thereof, a single thermostat T, having an auxiliary heater winding A, being provided to control both heating elements UR, LR; an electrically operated device S being further provided so that either the heating element UR or the element LR may be connected to a supply LN, the auxiliary heater winding A of the thermostat being energized when the element UR is energized whereby the effective setting of the thermostat is altered. The operating element of the device S may be a bimetal strip B and a heater coil D which is energized when a manually operated switch RS is closed. The device S may take the form of two plunger operated switches 7, 8 (see Figs. 1, 2) the plungers 9a, 9b of which are operated by a flexible strip 10 which is movable by the action of a bimetal strip 13 carrying a stud 16 at one end thereof, the bimetal strip 13 being deformed by the heating coil 14. Alternatively the setting of the thermostat may be changed by a spiral bimetallic element coupled to the setting member and the change-over switch.
