Abstract
1,175,336. Protective arrangements. ARDCO Inc. 14 May, 1968, No. 22882/68. Heading H2K. [Also in Divisions F4 and H1] A glass panel 12 having a heating element 28 thereon is protected by a switching device 10 having a first means 50 for causing the closing of the device 10 when power is applied and second means 42 responsive to the load current to maintain the device closed so that interruption of the load current, e.g. due to breakage of the panel causes the opening of the switch device. As shown, the device 10 is a thermal relay having three fixed contacts 46 ... 48 and a moving contact 44 on a bi-metallic strip 42 heated by a heating resistor 50 when power is applied. The bi-metallic strip then deflects so that the contact 44 is brought into engagement with the contact 48. This completes the circuit for the panel heater 28 and disconnects the resistor 50, the relay being maintained closed by the heating of the bi-metallic strip 42 by the load current flowing through it. When the load current is interrupted, the bi-metallic strip 42 cools opening contacts 44, 48 and closing contacts 44, 47 so that the bi-metallic strip is heated by a resistor 52 and remains in a central position to prevent repeated interruption and restoration of the supply to the element 28. In a modified arrangement, Fig. 6 (not shown), the resistor 52 is connected between fixed contacts 46, 47. In other arrangements, Figs. 2, 4 and 5 (not shown), the thermal relay has two fixed contacts and the first means is a heating resistor connected across those contacts. Fig. 3 (not shown), illustrates an arrangement in which the switching device is an electromagnetic relay having a coil connected across its contact and a coil connected in series with its contacts.
