Abstract
Polynosic viscose rayon fibres are bleached by wetting a bed of such rayon fibres for at least 20 seconds with an aqueous solution containing 0.05-10 grams per litre of an alkali metal chlorite and having a pH of 1-3 at a temperature of 30 DEG -80 DEG C. The aqueous solution may also contain 0.1-2% by weight of sulphuric acid and corrosion inhibiters, e.g. sodium nitrate. Freshly spun viscose rayon fibres may be introduced on to an endless stainless steel wire mesh belt and sprayed as they are moved along on the belt with a series of liquids, e.g. hot water, a 0.2% by weight caustic soda solution, hot water, aqueous chlorite solution containing sulphuric acid, hot water and ammonia, with squeezing between each liquid treatment, and then finished by washing, scouring and steaming and dried.
