Abstract

A carded web of cellulosic fibres is treated with an aqueous solution of a wetting agent, mangled to provide a flattened form, impregnated in the flattened condition with an aqueous solution of a bleaching agent or dyestuff, mangled to a predetermined liquor ratio, passed through a heater to raise its temperature to that requisite for bleaching or dyeing, plated and piled in an accumulator for a sufficient time to effect bleaching or dyeing and, in the case of a bleaching process, after an alkali boil and neutralization, if necessary, is washed and dried. The fibres treated may be of regenerated cellulose, raw cotton which may have been subjected to bale breaking, opening and cleaning prior to carding, or cotton linters or waste. The carded web may be gathered to form a rope and given a slight twist prior to flattening. The treatment liquor ratio may be in the range 1 : 1 to 6 : 1 by weight, and bleaching reagents specified are hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite and sodium chlorite. The alkali boil, in the case of bleaching, may be effected with soda ash.
