1,040,632. Endless conveyers; article gripping devices; packaging machines. BRAUEREIUND KELLEREIMASCHINENFABRIK MAGDEBURG VEB. Feb. 12, 1964, No. 5872/64. Addition to 978,774. Headings B8A, B8C and B8H. Bottles 5 are gripped by resilient grippers 3 which have portions 8 for clamping on an endless chain 1. Bottle-gripping arms 3a, Fig. 2 (not shown), are normally inclined inwards and a tension spring 9 may assist the gripping effect, Fig. 3 (not shown). The outer faces of upper arms 3b are engageable by frusto-conical discs 4 which are associated with each return wheel 2 for the chain 1. In operation, as the chain engages the wheel 2 above a feed conveyer 6, the discs 4 urge the arms 3b together and the gripper arms 3a diverge. The bottles thus enter the grippers, Fig. 2, and are gripped for transport as soon as the chain leaves the wheel 2. On arrival at a discharge conveyer 7, the gripper arms 3a are again caused to diverge and the bottles are released. When the bottles are to be transported in an inclined path, the interval between the grippers is increased and the speed of the conveyer 6 is made adjustable. A number of chains 1 with grippers 3 may be arranged side by side.
