Abstract
In a photo-conductive/electro-luminescent image converter panel, the phosphor is zinc sulphide activated by manganese and copper only and is capable of being operated on D.C. The preparation of the phosphor is described and involves firing pure ZnS with manganese and copper sulphates in the temperature range 700 DEG -1300 DEG C. Variation of the molecular ratio Mn/ZnS between 5 X 10-3 and 5 X 10-5 gives colours ranging from orange through white to blue. The phosphor may be used without a binder or in a resin matrix. The photo-conductive material may be PbS. An opaque, electrically anisotropic layer may be interposed between the layers to eliminate optical feedback. Conductive layers of stannous oxide complete the panel. The panel may be made sensitive not only to U.V., visible and I.R. radiation but also to X-rays or alpha, beta or gamma rays. It can also be operated on A.C.
