Abstract

1,241,085. Electroluminescence. MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO. Ltd. 27 Jan., 1969 [26 Jan., 1968], No. 4399/69. Heading C4S. An image converter comprises composite radiation-sensitive element 20 composed of radiosensitive elements 21 and 22, sensitive to visible light, infrared radiation, for X-rays, for example, element 21 responding more quickly to incident radiation than element 22 and the latter being of higher dielectric strength and impedance when not irradiated than the former, electroluminescent layer 4 and electrodes 5 and 10. The device may include glass layer 6, stannic oxide electrode 5, EL layer 4 about 50 Á thick and of ZnS powder in epoxy resin, 5 Á thick opaque layer 3 such as carbon in a similar binder to layer 4, a 50 to 80 Á thick layer 21 of powders of CdSe, and CdHgTe mixed in epoxy resin provided with a W grid electrode of filaments of 10 to 50 Á diameter at 200 to 600 micron intervals or a 30 to 150 mesh net. Layer 22 may also be sensitive to a degree to an X-ray image and may be a 200 to 400 Á layer of CdS or CdS-CdSe in epoxy resin. Electrode 10 may be partially or completely embedded in layer 21, may be between layers 21 and 22 or be on the outer surface of layer 21. Resistance changes of layer 21 in the thickness direction rather than laterally may be utilized when electrode 10 is a continuous thin film electrode and layer 21 is thickened. For infrared excitation layer 21 may be PbS, PbSe or CdHgTe, and layer 22 CdSe.
