Abstract
An alloy steel comprising:- .C.0.1-0.6% .either Cr.0.5-6% or another strong carbide former 0.5-3% .Mu.1.5-9.0% .Si.0-3% .Nb.0-1% the balance, apart from incidental impurities being iron is austenetized at above the Ac3 point, quenched to between the Ac1 and Ms temperatures, worked within this range and then quenched to below the Mt point to form martensite. The martensitic steel may then be cold worked and tempered (e.g. at 200 DEG C.). Alternatively the steel after working between the Ac1 and Ms temperatures may be isothermally transformed to give a pearlitic or bainitic structure which may be cold worked. Impurities contents disclosed are S 0.2% max., P 0.2% max., N 0.01% max., O 0.05% max., Cu 0.01% max Al 0.01% max. and a few parts per million of Zu, Bi, Ca, Mg, Pb and Zr. Examples of other strong carbide formers are Mo, Ti and V.
