Abstract
1453064 Working at specific temperatures BETHLEHEM STEEL CORP 6 Dec 1973 [20 Dec 1972] 56700/73 Heading B3V [Also in Division C7] A steel containing 0À03-0À65% C, one or both of Mo and Cr, and one or more of B, Mn and Ni, balance Fe, the composition being such that the knee of the curve indicating commencement of the pearlite transformation on the isothermal transformation curve is displaced to the right of the knee of the bainite transformation curve, is austenitized at 1500- 2200‹ F. and then subjected to a number of hot working operations at progressively decreasing temperatures, the first operation being carried out above 1500‹F. and the final one after initiation, but before completion of the bainite transformation. Preferably the initial operation is at 1600-2200‹ F. and there are at least four steps before the initiation of bainite transformation. Preferably the alloy contains #0À25% Mo, or #0À75% Cr if Mo <0À25%, and may contain sufficient ferrite stabilizer (Mo, Cr, V, Si, Nb, Ti) to retard the pearlite transformation.
