Abstract

Sheets of microporous polyurethane material are dyed by immersing them in an aqueous dye solution at pH 3-9 containing a water-soluble anionic dye containing at least one water-solubilising group linked below with an empirical figure related to its water-solubilising power: -SO3- <FORM:1034558/D1-D2/1> -OH (0.25), -NH2 (0.25), -NH- (0.25), -OCH3 (0.25), -NH-CO-NH- (0.25), -SO2NH- (0.25), -SO2- (0.25) and -CONH- (0.25), the dye having an "equivalent weight" (its molecular weight divided by the sum of the solubilising values above) of 200-600, the dyed material being then masked in water and dried. The dyes are preferably anionic azo or anthraquinone dyes having an "equivalent weight" of 250-500. The process may be carried out by using a dyebath at 75-100 DEG C. initially at pH 7 and reducing to pH 5 by adding acetic, formic or citric acid. The microporous sheets may contain a porous fibrous substrate of many specified types especially polyethylene terephthalate fibre and the polyurethane may contain up to 50% of polyvinyl chloride. The dyed materials may be after-chromed to improve the fastness. Examples are given.
