Abstract

1,031,526. Moulding treated thermoplastic materials. MONSANTO CO. March 5, 1963 [March 26, 1962], No. 8721/63. Heading B5A. A method of permanently shaping a flat fabric material into a three-dimensional form, the fabric material being wholly or mainly of heat-softenable fibres, comprises applying to the fabric a thermosetting resin, a latex and a catalyst for the resin, heating the fabric to a temperature corresponding to the softening temperature of the heat-softenable fibres and to the setting temperature of the resin and latex, and while so heated conforming the fabric to the shape of a mould. The fabric material is preferably mainly acrylonitrile, mixed with another copolymerizable mono-olefinic monomer, e.g. vinyl acetate, with or without viscose. The latex may be an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid. The thermosetting resin is a melamine-formaldehyde or a urea-formaldehyde resin (specific examples are given), the catalyst being hydrogen peroxide. The process may be used for making shoe tops, hats, brassiere cups and toys.
