Abstract
Caprolactam is made by the nitrosation of a mono-substituted cyclohezane, in which the substituent is a monovalent organic radical, in the presence of sulphuric and/or chlorosulphonic acid using a nitrosation agent obtained by contacting nitrous fumes with chlorosulphonic acid. Suitable nitrous fumes are those comprising equimolar proportions of nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide. Cyclohexane derivatives known in the art to form caprolactam on nitrosation may be used. The example relates to the treatment of cyclohexane carboxylic acid.
