Abstract
More concentrated nitric acid is produced by treating nitric acid containing dissolved oxides of nitrogen in a tower, containing devices to ensure good gas-liquid contact, with air and/or oxygen flowing in the same direction as the acid in order to oxidize the dissolved oxides, whereafter the nitric acid is treated in counterflow with air in order to remove the oxides still dissolved. The treatment with air and/or oxygen is preferably carried out at 20-50 C. and under from 1 to 10 atmospheres. The counter-flow treatment with air may be carried out at a pressure between atmospheric pressure and that used during the oxidation. Conventional gas-liquid contact apparatus is used.
