Abstract
Oxalic acid is prepared by oxidizing propylene by introducing to nitric acid at 10 to 40 C. and heating to 45 to 100 C., with the simultaneous removal of the nitrogen oxides. The nitric acid concentration in the solution is maintained in the range 50 to 75% by weight, and the molar ratio of propylene to 100% nitric acid maintained throughout at between 0À01 to 1 and 0À5 to 1. Oxygen or oxygen containing gas may be introduced before or during either heating stage, and an elevated pressure may be employed. The process may be continuous, and suitable reactor series are described.
