Abstract

1,029,289. Laminates. K. H. SCHEUFELEN, and K. E. SCHEUFELEN. Dec. 19, 1962 [Dec. 23, 1961], No. 47907/62. Heading B5N. A laminate comprises at least one layer of paper-like material impregnated with a melamine-formaldehyde resin bonded to one or both sides of a metal layer. The metal layer may be steel, light metal bronze or brass and may be in the form of a foil, mesh, perforated foil or expanded metal. The paper-like material may be paper made from natural or synthetic fibres or both or a paper fibre fleece. The melamine formaldehyde resin may contain plasticizers. To increase the bonding between the metal layer and the impregnated paper an intermediate layer can be interposed, e.g. an epoxy resin or a foil of thermoplastic resin such as polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polyacrylates and polymethacrylates. The surface of the metal layer may be treated by phosphatization, chromate treatment, anodizing or coating with polyvinyl butyral. The laminate is made by assembling the layers while the synthetic resin is still uncured or partially cured and applying heat and pressure to cure the resin and bond the layers together. The laminate may be subsequently shaped by the application of heat and pressure.
