Abstract

1349278 Decorative glass fibre surfaced laminates WESTVACO CORP 14 June 1971 [12 June 1970 25 Jan 1971 8 Feb 1971] 27797/71 Heading B5N A decorative laminate comprises a single, protective, clear overlay sheet formed of glass fibres and a layer or combination of two layers which layer or combination is both decorative and shock absorbing, said sheet and layer(s) being bonded by and impregnated with a thermoset polyester resin which resin has been cured under low pressure conditions. Low pressure laminates are defined as being laminates which can be cured by the application of heat at relatively low pressures, usually below 250 p.s.i. In a preferred embodiment a laminate is made from a sheet of glass fibres, a sheet of decorative kraft paper and a rigidity imparting substrate, e.g. flakeboard or plywood. In a second embodiment, a laminate is made from a sheet of glass fibres, a print sheet which may be kraft paper or may be formed, from cellulose, acrylonitrile or polyester fibres and a cushioning sheet of cotton fibres, the consolidated laminate being bonded to a substrate, e.g. plywood, gypsum board, lumber, particle board, hardboard, metal, flakeboard or asbestos board. The resin which may be applied by dipping or coating from solution, preferably so as to locate more resin on the face of the print sheet contacting the overlay than on the other face may be a mixture of an unsaturated polyester resin and an unsaturated monomer polymerizable therewith.
