Abstract

Mercaptan-containing petroleum oil stocks are desulphurized by adding to the liquid oil an alkali metal hydroxide, for example sodium hydroxide, in either solid or dissolved form, and then, without removal of reaction products from the mixture, adding a dialkyl sulphoxide having the general formula <FORM:1025375/C4-C5/1> where R and R1, which may be the same or different, are selected from methyl, ethyl, or propyl, and thereafter separating the treated oil from the resulting admixture.
