Abstract

1,024,421. Endless conveyers. MIDLAND INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 23, 1962 [April 22, 1961], No. 14647/61. Heading B8A. Articles 37, Fig. 3 (not shown), such as metal billets, are conveyed along a passage 36 by two conveyer units 22, 23 mounted on parallel horizontal slide bars 21 for adjustment of the width of the passage 36. Each conveyer unit comprises an endless chain 33 trained around an idler sprocket 31 and a driven sprocket 32. Each chain 33 comprises pairs of coaxial rollers 44 supported in the inner run 35 by stationary backing bars 45, Fig. 4 (not shown). Gripping members 47 are attached to each chain 33 by brackets 53 and consist of a metal face pad 55 backed by a rubber block 56 and free to slide in a metal box 48 by means of pins 58 in slots 59. The weight of the articles 37 is carried by a base bar 69, the face pads 55 being angled to exert a downward force on to the articles 37. At the entrance end 38 to the passage 36 guides 62 are provided with a roller steady 63 consisting of spring-loaded rollers 64, Fig. 1 (not shown), to feed the articles to the passage 36. In order to avoid jamming of articles in the entrance end 38 the leading edge portions 65 of the face pads 55 are chamfered, Figs. 5 to 8 (not shown), to reduce the difference in speed in the direction of conveyance of face pads 55 in the entrance end 38 and those approaching round the sprocket 32.
