1,024,183. Taking up slack in flexible elements. ELECTRICITE DE FRANCE (SERVICE NATIONAL). Feb. 27, 1963 [March 7, 1962], No. 7880/63. Heading B8B. [Also in Division G6] Apparatus for supporting flexible electrical fluid &c. cables between fixed and movable points comprises a trolley 1, Fig. 1, running on rollers 22 along rails 18 arranged above a cable chain 27 and carrying a coupling connector 6 on the end of a connecting arm 5 which is pivotally and slidably mounted to permit movement of the connector 6 at right-angles to the rails. The apparatus is adapted to be moved by remote control and is described for use with handling machines of nuclear reactors which are required to move over a floor along or transversely to parallel sets of rails. The trolley 1 is driven by an electric motor 24 through vertical shafts 30 and rack-and-pinions (not shown). The connecting arm 5 is pivotally mounted to the trolley 1 through a pin 36 which is slidable on rollers 39 between vertical rails 40 to permit horizontal movements of the connector 6. The arm 5 is supported at a pivot 58 by a second arm 8 which is pivoted at 60 to the base of the trolley 1. Angular movement between the arms 5, 8 is controlled by screw-and-nut systems 64, 66 driven through transverse shafts 78 bevel gears &c. from a remote controlled electric motor 68. The connector 6 is maintained in the horizontal position at all positions of the arm 5, by a pinion shaft 50 engaging an arcuate rack 44 on the connector 6, and an arcuate rack (not shown) on the arm 8. Movement of the arms 5, 8 may be automatically synchronized with the movements of the handling apparatus through an electrical servo system comprising micro-contacts 82-84, Fig. 8 (not shown), arranged between relatively movable parts of the connector 6 and controlling a second electric motor 98, Fig. la, (not shown), coupled to the screw-and-nut drive 64, 66, 68 through a differential gear 70. A further motor 110, Fig. 6 (not shown), attached through a clutch to the motor 68 may be arranged for the separate operation of inserting the connector 6 into the trolley.
