Abstract

Metal surfaces are stripped of coating materials by electrolysis using as electrolyte a molten mixture of NaOH and one or more alkali metal salts viz. alkali metal carbonate, halide, sulphate, phosphate, silicate, borate, stannate, zincate, plumbate, molybdate, fluo-silicate, titanate, zirconate, fluo-titanate, fluo-zirconate, fluoborate, or mixtures thereof. Preferred mixtures are: 85 NaOH, 5 Na3PO4, 10 KCl and 85 NaOH, 5 Na3PO4, 2-5 Na2SnO3 and 10 KOH. The molten mixture is applied at 900 DEG C. using 4-6 V. at up to 100 Amps. The current may be reversed periodically. The process is applied to de-tinning steel sheet, removing rubber and silicate coatings, paint, and anodized, and phosphate coatings. The examples are mainly concerned with stripping tin, and lead from copper.
