Abstract
Cryolite is precipitated in two stages which may be continuous from the alkaline (e.g. NaOH) back solution of furnace wastes from the melt electrolysis of Al2O3 in molten cryolite, in the first stage from a basic solution using an HF-containing solution and then from an acid solution using an AlF3-containing solution. The first precipitation is done preferably at pH 7.5-13 by adding tower acid, i.e. the aqueous liquid from washing waste gases from electrolytic Al production furnaces. After removal of cryolite, the mother liquor contains a large amount of NaF which is precipitated in the second stage as cryolite preferably at a pH 2-6.5 using tower acid to which has been added Al(OH)3 to form AlF3. The residual mother liquor is separated from the cryolite and may be recycled to the leaching process, preferably after CO2 stripping, with addition of further NaOH. The precipitating agents may be added in a continuous stream to a continuous stream of leach solution. The pH may be controlled by conventional means.
